Gormless Doormen

This happened about a month ago, at "The Village" bar in Dublin. I haven't heard back from the management (surprise surprise...) and was thinking of following it up with another courteous email

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you to inform you of the offensive attitude of a doorman that I encountered at your bar last night. I was in the company of a good male friend and my fiancée. Seeing as the doorman directed all of his door-manners at me, I think we shall exclude them temporarily.

As I walked into you bar (infront of my friend and fiancée) I was stopped by the doorman and given what I can only describe as the most ridiculous comment I have heard in a long time: "Sorry, can't do anything for you tonight mate". (Does this mean that on another night, this gormless doorman would have been able to do something for me? Hold my hand as I went in possibly?) When I asked what he meant by this, I was told the exact same thing - "I can't do anything for you tonight". Do you have a policy of only hiring people without a sufficient expanse of polite excuses for why some people can't enter your bar? I asked him again, what he meant by this , he stepped forward (pretty much into my face) and said in a raised tone "What I mean is you're not getting in".

Clockiness

Hey, Bone, can we change the clock to something more useful? Maybe EST or CST or something? I get headaches trying to convert Grenwich Mean to something meaningful to see when posts were, well, posted.

Burgophilia

Few of us live in a Hardee's market area anymore, so when I happened upon this commercial, I was compelled to share.

For more a cerebral experience, try turning down the Foghat and cranking some Ferneyhough on the hi-fi!

Old timey afflictions

Why is it that I just don't hear about epilepsy anymore? Aside from the unfortunate Pokemon (or whatever) video strobe that caused seizures, epilepsy has gone by the wayside.

Have we conquered the big E with appropriate treatment? There are a number of diseases people just don't get anymore. (By 'people', I mean 'Americans'.)

Who gets rickets these-a-days? Or catarrh. Or consumption.

OK, perhaps they have new-timey names, but wait, I'm getting off track.

Where did epilepsy go?

Math Against Tyranny

I've had a drunken discussion or two recently about the electoral college. I recalled an article I had read that made a very interesting article explaining how, mathematically, the electoral college system increases the value of an individuals vote. Most people that I talk to think the electoral college is completely asinine, whereas I, after reading this article, think that it is only somewhat asinine.

Don't trash talk the EC again until you read this article.

Google SMS

Vivek gave me the skinny on an SMS service offered by google. You send a text message contains a price, definition, address or service request to "46645" (G-O-O-G-L on the keypad). Then, they text you back with the results.

Why Tuesday?

Flaw:

There was a piece on NPR this morning about a number of controversies in states throughout the US. Apparently, there are rules on the books in some states that require ballots cast in the wrong district to be thrown out, other states allow them to be counted.

Some argue that allowing out of district votes would be a logistical nightmare, and should be disallowed. The counter-argument is that people who work in a different district than they live end up unable to vote because they can't get back to their district in time to cast a ballot.

It seems reasonable, for the sake of holding orderly elections with timely results that people should cast their ballots in their home district. But, it's also not fair to disenfranchise those who are forced to work during the voting hours. (I suspect, unfortunately, that we'll be hearing that d-word a lot over the next month or so.)

The real problem, in my opinion, is that we hold our elections on Tuesdays, right in the middle of the work week. In a country that has trouble getting half of it's electorate out to the polls for presidential elections, why on earth do we hold elections on such an inconvenient day?

I Thought It Couldn't Happen To Me

Alright, there are still a few bugs to work out on this forum and on my front page component. I wrote that bit from scratch which is why it's still a little bit lame with the bbcode parsing. In any case, in the interest of keeping Colin's vitriol from being overrun with discussion of the bug that it highlights, I'm creating a new category to post any bugs that you find.

So, if I screwed something up, lambast me there ("Meta-Jeaun/Locusts In My PHP"), rather than wherever it happened. This Big Ugly Universal Resource Locator should get you there.

Jon Stewart roughs up the Crossfire Crew

I've been reading about this for a couple days, but I finally saw the clip last night. It's absolutely stunning: Stewart totally reasons out the problems with today's media on Crossfire. It gets a little ugly, but it's very important that he's out there saying these things.

Here's a link to the video:

For those that don't want to watch, read: http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0410/15/cf.01.html

I think that Stewart's analysis of the damage that simple black & white media "debate" is spot on as well as his impression of Tucker Carlson. Also, it's depressing when a FAKE news anchor is the one championing integrity and the public discourse.

/Also, ignore my previous post, in fact, Wads, if you could kill it for me, that'd be great....
