the hobgoblin of little minds
Submitted by Graver on Fri, 01/07/2005 - 13:01. How Is Possible?Someone posted a second-hand quote of Ralph Waldo Emerson on Nounatron's front page as:
"Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds."
Its a pretty common quote that gets misused (and misquoted) all the time. For a long time, I couldn't understand why he'd write something like that. I couldn't fathom how consistency was somehow and indication of stupidity. Taking it a step further it seems to say that a good way to be brilliant or a great mind is to be totally inconsistent in whatever you undertake. I eventually just assumed I must have a little mind by Emerson's estimation.
It turns out that its a consistently misquoted statement.
"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines."
so, who's got the little mind?
Stewart: 1, Carlson 0
Submitted by Colin on Thu, 01/06/2005 - 10:31. How Is Possible?CNN has decided to let Tucker Carlson go because his aspirations do not synch up with their programming needs. I personally would like to believe that they found themselves agreeing with Jon Stewart as he upbraided Carlson for being a journo-whore fluffer instead of an actual journalist.
Good job CNN. Next step: Actually reporting news in an objective and context rich fashion.
"Wonderful World of Chemistry: the Musical"
Submitted by sundaykofax on Wed, 01/05/2005 - 17:50. Nasty Of All TimeI actually came across this while working. I'm compiling wacky Abbott facts for a "Now You Know" section of an internal publication.
For the 1964-1965 Worlds Fair (which wasn't actually sanctioned) Dupont kicked ass. "Wonderful World of Chemistry" was a musical that included numbers like "The Happy Plastic Family." Everything in the theater was made of Dupont plastics; Nylon carpets, Tedlar roof, Antron and Fabrilite seat fabrics, Mylar stage curtains and Delrin doorknobs.

DeeJayKay
Submitted by wadsbone on Wed, 01/05/2005 - 15:41. Bluff, Gimmick, Or Flaw?Someone has started a blog on blogspot who claims to be Dennis J Kucinich, everyone's favorite vegan congressman. He's decided to go by the DeeJayKay in order to be more "with it" web-wise.
I'm sure it's not actually Dennis Kucinich posting to the blog, but it's awfully amusing to suspend disbelief for a second. Enjoy it while you can; the secret service is on it's way.
By the way, who would win in a fight, DeeJayKay or Ralph Nader?
Sigh ...
Submitted by Shippy on Wed, 01/05/2005 - 12:52. How Is Possible?Okay, I know everyone's thinking the same thing, so I'm just going to come out and say it:
Jeaun.com has become deadly boring.
I appreciate the occasional attempt to liven things up with interesting posts (Sunday and Wadsbone, I'm looking in your direction, which is easy since I live with you). But seriously, folks. How else am I supposed to divert myself for 5 hours out of my 7 hour workday?
So what happened? Is it Mambo? Post-election ennui? A sudden surge in Luddite tendancies? I'm guessing it's Mambo.
I want the old Jeaun.com back. The one with pictures of Rocco and suggestions for bandnames and speculations on who would win in a fight to the death between a bear, a shark, a lion, and John Ashcroft. God help me, I even miss the Grin's spirited trolling and the occasional Senni-baiting.
As we reel from the psychic devastation that tsunamis and re-elections have inflicted, and sit on the cusp of a new season of American Idol, I beseech thee: let's make Jeaun.com sexy again.

As Ade, Kate, Jason, Martha, Ro, and Matt Ryan can attest, there was a godawful sound as we were waking up early Saturday afternoon. Jason described it as "a bed being dragged across the floor".
Just more flaming peaches.
Spamming For Gaia
Submitted by wadsbone on Thu, 12/23/2004 - 23:03. Bluff, Gimmick, Or Flaw?I got a strange email a few months ago on my gmail account. It was unsolicited, but it wasn't commercial, so I suppose it's not technically spam. In any case, I was intrigued by it, so I kept it around intending to read it at some point.
I finally got around to reading it through tonight, and it was interesting enough that I thought I should share it. The email discusses how oil production is currently at it's peak, and as oil production slows and demand increases, it's going to become more and more difficult and expensive to switch to more sustainable forms of energy. I'd never made that connection before. If oil production really did stop, it'd be nearly impossible to build the sustainable energy infrastructure to support the world's population.
Anyway, the canuck who wrote it explains it much more elegantly than I can:
Peak Oil And The Extinction Of Humanity
Some of it is a little bit fear-mongery, but the most disturbing part of it is how lucid and sensible it seems. But, maybe I'm just drunk. What do you think?
