Bush's Bulge: Reprise
Submitted by wadsbone on Fri, 10/29/2004 - 17:50. Bluff, Gimmick, Or Flaw? There's a story on Salon about an analysis of the images of the mysterious bulge under Bush's jacket during one of the debates. The analysis was done by a physicist who specializes in being a big nerd for NASA. He also happens to be a Kerry supporter, but claims this didn't bias his analysis.
It does look like there's something under there. But, I think, judging by his performance in the debate, that Bush still deserves the benefit of the doubt. The "wire" running up his shoulder looks a hell of a lot like his shoulder blade to me. Cover up the rest of the bulge with your hand and it looks perfectly natural. He didn't have any wires going into his ear, and if he had been wearing an ear-piece, I'm pretty sure he'd use better technology than that.
But, there's still the rest of the bulge to account for. Maybe it was some sort of medical device and he doesn't want to admit it because it might make him seem infirm to the fickle voters. It doesn't look like a back brace, though, so I'm not sure what it could be. My guess is that it's the tail of the alien that has embedded itself into his spinal cord and has taken control of his brain. By "accepted Christ," he means "became a host for a hostile alien presence."
The Problem With X
Submitted by wadsbone on Thu, 10/28/2004 - 12:14. Bluff, Gimmick, Or Flaw? There was an interesting point/counter-point this morning on NPR. Unfortunately, the transcripts aren't available, but the audio is posted on the NPR site:
The Problem With Republicans
The Problem With Democrats
True to NPR form, both of these guys, though unquestionably partisan, give some unusually cogent arguments. What do you think?
Note: They played "The Problem With Republicans" first.

Shaving Your Ass: American Politics
Submitted by wadsbone on Wed, 10/27/2004 - 23:49. Nasty Of All TimeI'm giving some link action an a shot of google juice to http://www.shavingyourass.com/. Cowboyd was my travelling wilbury in South America. He wrote an interesting article about how he plans to deal with his DISENFRANCHISEMENT as an off-continent hooligan. This makes two people I know who won't be able to vote on the 2nd because of voter registration laws.
It's probably a site worthing checking back at every once in a while, since cowboyd and friends were trying to get more serious about writing for it regularly.

and search out at least one typo, grammatical error or puntuation mistake. Being wiki, I can make instant changes which makes instant happiness.
Tell me, is this dorkier than a sweater with Captain Kirk's face on it? I can't tell.

Cole Alexander was born this morning. I can't really offer any more details because I only talked to him for a bit. I'm sure more will be forthcoming.
Futurecats!
Submitted by Colin on Wed, 10/27/2004 - 09:36. How Is Possible?By 2007, we will have Hypoallergenic cats HYPOALLERGENIC CATS! Future world keeps marching on. So here's my question, mostly aimed at E. Lo as the medical authority among us:
They suppress the production of a protein secreted by the cats skin and salivary glands. Wouldn't that cause a problem with the cats? There's got to be a biological reason for that protein. Maybe their fur will be all fucked up?
I'm happy about this because it means someday Jenny and I could have a cat again and it wouldn't make it sneeze and be miserable. But the price tag is $3,500. Maybe there's a genetically modified pet black market?
Welcome to futurepetworld.
Here comes the vote!
Submitted by Colin on Tue, 10/26/2004 - 08:45. VitriolSo there's only 7 days until we go to the polls and elect electors to elect our new president. We've already talked a little bit about this electoral college, so let's not talk about that....
So here's a little election roundup & discussion:
An interesting op-ed by Krugman at the NYTimes (reg required), indicating that the missing explosives were gone before the war, but the administration didn't let the IAEA inspect the site. Standard administration practice of cover cover cover. Kerry and Edwards are pressing this as evidence as Bush's incompetence, as they should.
Scary article about how Ohio may be the Florida of 2004. Here's the important point if you don't want to deal with WP registration:
"Republicans have already filed 35,000 challenges to voters' eligibility and are preparing to send recruits into 8,000 polling places next Tuesday to challenge other voters they suspect are not eligible, particularly hundreds of thousands of the newly registered. Democrats are alarmed at the effort, saying it could tie up voting and keep many away from the polls."
I think that's completely fucked up. Sure, people should only vote once and we shouldn't have dead people voting, etc..etc.., but what the hell is this challenging bullshit? If someone challenged my right to vote, I'd likely give them a swift punch in the face.
I'm sure there are more stories out there that are relevant and good to read. Post 'em up!
Now, on to the real question: So do you guys think happens if 2000 is repeated? We've got everything we need to make it happen: Republican vote challengers, Florida's already messed up voting, electronic voting machines with no paper trail... So what happens if the result is dubious as in 2000? Will SCOTUS step up and become political again? (oh please no)
Civil war? Cats & dogs living together? Mass hysteria?
