Pound Jeaun (or The Depths of Geekitude)

I've been using IRC lately for work, and it seems like it'd be cool to have an IRC channel for jeaun. For those who aren't familiar with it, IRC is kind of like a normal IM conversation. Except on an IRC channel, there are usually more than two participants, and you usually stay logged in to the channel for long periods of time.

I don't whether this will be practical for people who have to go work at offices and things like that, but if you're just chilling in front of your computer, it can be quite nice to be able to quickly, easily and publicly insult Graver's lineage.

I've already created a jeaun channel on irc.freenode.net. If you've already got an IRC client installed, clicking the previous link should take you there. I'd suggest setting your client to automatically join the jeaun channel when you log in.

Click the read more link for instructions on connecting to #jeaun.

If you haven't got an IRC client, and you've got a Mac, here's what you need to do:

Download and install Colloquy

Open Colloquy and press cmd-N (or, in the menu, select File -> New Connection)

Enter the Nickname that you want to use. Try to make it something unique; it won't work if someone else already has the name.

The Server Protocol should be IRC (Internet Relay Chat)

The Chat Server should be irc.freenode.net

Check the "Remember this connection" box.

Click the Connect button.

The Connections window should appear with irc.freenode.net listed. (If it doesn't appear, press cmd-1, or select Window->Connections)

Select the irc.freenode.net line and press the "Join Room" button

Enter #jeaun as the Chat Room name and press Join.

The Chat window should come up.

If you're using a PC, then you could try GAIM or mIRC. There may be better options, but I don't know what they are. Someone other than me probably has a better idea of what doesn't suck in the windows/linux IRC world. The connection process is probably about the same as in Colloquy, so the instructions above might not be entirely useless to you.

You might want to register the nickname that you've chosen so that no one else can impersonate you. I'll walk you through that when you join, if you want.

Intonation 2006

I posted the pictures I took at Intonation 2006 with my camera phone in the gallery.

Anyone care to discuss the awesomeness of that festival? It had perfect weather (down to the dramatic sprinkle during the Bloc Party set), unexpectedly entertaining bands, rooster sauce, and all the Sparks you could drink. I couldn't ask for much more than that.

My rock 'n roll high points were Bloc Party, High On Fire, Rhymefest, and Lupe Fiasco. But, everything was at least pretty good in a chilling in the sun context, with the exception of The Streets. (That marks the second time in two weeks that I left a Streets performance after about 3 songs.)

Rhymefest was particularly amazing. I don't know if I've ever seen an MC who knew how to work a crowd that well. There was this subtle, racial tension at the beginning of the set, what with all these white kids in the crowd (like me) who weren't quite sure how much fun they were allowed to have at a hip-hop performance. It's stupid, but it was there, and I wasn't the only one feeling that way. Rhymefest must have noticed, and he worked a few lines into his first freestyle about how the crowd was white and he was black, but it doesn't matter; everyone just needs to chill out and enjoy the show. His version was a lot more stylish and eloquent. It may sound silly, but it was perfectly delivered, and you could feel people starting to relax afterward. It's hard to describe the experience, but it felt good. I wouldn't miss another chance to see him live.

P.S. - I suppose this is a good time to point out that I integrated the gallery into jeaun more closely. You should be able to add new albums from the "gallery" link in the "create content" menu. Most of you should have permission to do this. If the link isn't there, and you want to add some photos, send me an e-mail and I'll add you to the list.
Tunnel of Tolerance

Link of the Day:
Tunnel of Tolerance

Canada is nipping at the heels of Denmark in the race for the title of Most Likely to Have Your Embassy Torched. Not only does this cartoon feature a banned likeness of The Prophet, but he's kissing another man! And that other man is Jesus! And they're married! And tattoed! And high on heroin! It's an offenstravaganza!

(Actually, it's not clear whether they're married or high. But, I'm pretty sure they are.)

Unos Libros para el Flankmont

You can netflix pretty much anything these days. Me, I'm trying the netflix for audiobooks, which I will henceforth call "bookflix," in cool defiance of both etymology and trademark.

The pipeline is: they send me books on CD, I rip the CDs to mp3, send the CDs back, and put the mp3s on my portable music device for consumption at my convenience.

The digital books are now available on my exposed flank, under Audiobooks. I've just started with this jeaun, so the selection is still a bit limited. Also, I've so far been biased towards books that lend themselves to listening rather than reading, so the overall quality of content on the virtual shelf is probably only a split pube north of supermarket checkout aisle.

I'm taking requests. Let me know via post-response if there's anything you'd like made available. Fulfillment time would be a little over a week, unless your suggestion sucks.

The Cold Cometh

Hey guys... The weatherman says its going to get hotter and hotter next week, but I saw leaves falling off trees on the southside last night. This can only mean one thing.... the chill of autumn is on the way. We have to keep the summer party going at various indoor venues. In an effort to get the ball rolling, I posted some upcoming concerts that I thought might be fun. Don't know if I'll be able to go to all of them... but I thought I'd just throw it out there.
Franz Ferdinand, The Gossip, Built to Spill, KMFDM, New Pornographers, Reverend Horton Heat, Broken Social Scene, The Go! Team and some wacked out Halloween 80's party at the Double Door.

Art Link O' the Day

From Drawn! The Illustration Blog

Painter, illustrator, skateboard designer and sometimes comics artist Esao Andrews has a site that's almost more enjoyable than the actual illustrations within. (Be sure to move the cursor over the mirror; how cool is that?)
